Personal Budget - Giving yourself an allowance?

I’ve found recently that I needed some way to control my entertainment and dining out spending. I am starting to experiment with personal allowances. I like the concept of setting a side x amount of dollars to spend each week on entertainment and dining out. If I exhaust that amount I force myself to wait until next week for more “allowance money”. If I stay in one weekend and don’t spend it I can start to accrue allowance money. On the same token, If I have a big weekend coming up where I know i’m going out (birthday celebration etc) I can stay in the week before and save my allowance money.

This gives me free will to take that money and know that its mine to spend and I can spend it freely but once its gone its gone.

My question to people who have done this; How has an allowance worked for you? What amount would you recommend for this type of allowance (amount or percentage) I was considering $100 a week. Everyones thought and input would be much appreciated!

Hold on a minute. A budget does not start with your spending money. Since you don’t say I am going to assume that you are a single young man. If you are able to pay all of your monthly expenses as well as putting money into your savings to cover things that come up in a year or less (such as car insurance), then $100 a week is great. Remember you don’t have to spend it just because you have it. Save whats left over for a special occasion. Perhaps going away for a weekend trip.
