What other fees/payments should you think of when budgeting for a home?
I want to buy my own house but first I want to see if we can afford it. I can think of two things other than utilities… garbage pick up and property tax. Is there any other payments or fees I should consider?

Who has advice about choosing an area in/around Long Beach, CA?
I’ve lived in LB before near CSULB. I’m looking for areas that people like–I know Belmont Shores & the college area are good, are there any other good areas to live? Places that are relatively safe and hopefully cheaper than right on the water, as waterfront is out of my budget.
Please only respond if you have lived/spent a lot of time in the area. I’d prefer not to be in OC.

How to save for a home?
I am trying to form a plan to help me save money so I can put a down payment on a home within 3 years. I want to stay in my hometown or surrounding area, where an average to small home sells for about $850,000. How will I ever afford to buy? I am still in college, and make $30,000 a year at my job. (I am still in college)I hope to buy a fixer-upper at around $350,000. But how do I save? I am currenty spending about $900 on monthly expenses, and have already cut anything unessesary out of my budget. Any advice would be so greatly appreciated!

Any advice for a 1st time home buyer with limited upfront money and a family offer?
Ok – myself and my husband are ready to buy a house after our lease is up on our apartment. We have been looking around and can’t seem to find anything in our budget in an area that we like. Plus, I should mention that my dad was going to give us a loan for the upfront costs so we could buy the home.
My husbands uncle went through a divorce last year (it was messy where they sold the house and then backed out of the sale and tried to make it work with each other but couldn’t) so now he is ready to sell and asked us if we were interested in buying his home. We were but,he was going to put his house on the market for $50,000 more than we could afford to spend. YIKES!
He tried to stay in the house with his 2 children but decided that it was too much maintenance for 1 person. Now it has been so long and he is ready to just be done with it. He doesn’t want to go through the hassles of putting it on the market again – and he just wants out of the house and wants to move on with his life. He is willing to work with our budget and sell it to us for something that we can afford to pay monthly.
How do we do this? I don’t know what upfront costs there will be and I am new at this and this isn’t exactly a normal situation. I don’t know where to start. Any suggestions or tips?
Thanks!

New Home Moving-In Expenses: I’m moving into a new home; need advice on budgeting for?
…things like drapes/movers/etc.
My move is local and I will be downsizing. My current home has lots of storage (bookcases, built-in shelving, etc.). I know that there are going to be a lot of miscellaneous expenses that come in a move, and I would like as best I can to anticipate them. Thanks.
