Importance of Setting a Budget for College

budgeting
When first setting off for college, it is important to sit down with your parents and determine a budget. This not only includes loans, but also for books, food, entertainment, and miscellaneous expenses. Many college kids are given a credit card to use “only for emergencies”, but you will quickly learn that it is used far more often then that. When determining how much you are allotted to spend per month it is imperative to allocate those resources efficiently and responsibly. For example if your parents are giving you $300 per month for living expenses, the necessities must come first. Most likely if you are a first or second year in college you will be living in the dorms and being supplied with a meal plan. This enables you to plan for what the rest of your expenses will be stemming from. Now that your budget has been determined you must set realistic goals to what you will be spending your money on. By allotting a specific amount of money for entertainment for example, will provide you with boundaries so that you do not over spend. Budgeting can seem overwhelming at first, but there are great online resources you can visit to aid you in the process. Online software is available to help you efficiently manage your budget enabling you to stay on the straight and narrow when it comes to spending.

College students have the reputation of spending all of their money on pizza and beer forgoing buying books. However, if you start to budget early you will be able to have your books and eat your pizza too. A useful tool to use to budget for college is online banking and other financial management tools. There are even useful websites that track all of your spending from your different bank accounts, credit cards, and loan payments that you can use to amplify your budgeting. Saving is also a must for college students because most of the time college students have limited income, usually stemming from their parents. Saving is a part of life and it will pay in the long run if you start in college. I know this might be difficult but it is definitely worth it, for you can find savings everywhere you look. This might include searching for better interest rates on your credit cards and student loans.

Setting a budget for college should be weighed with high importance because it sets the stage for the rest of your financial life. Using tools that allow you to manage your accounts online give you a competitive advantage over the rest of your fellow classmates. For when you graduate 4 years from now you will have the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to make it in the real world of financial planning. Budgets are a part of life and it is time for you college student to jump on the bandwagon and start your journey to becoming oiled budgeting machine.

Risky Rolling, Inc. is a rapidly expanding manufacturer of skateboards that have been modified for use on ski slopes during the off-season. This year’s sales are consideraly higher that last years sales, and salses are expected to double next year. The unexpected growth in sales has presented numerous challenges to the company’s management team and the stress is really starting to show. Laura Dennan, the company;s president, believes that the management time required to prepare a cash budget should be devoted to other, more pressing matters.

The Perfect Budget

budgeting
Somebody asked me the other week “what is the perfect budget?” That’s an excellent question and there really is no right or wrong answer. Just as, individually, we’re all different, so too are our hopes and dreams, our lifestyles and our needs and wants.

So, what might be the perfect budget for one person might not necessarily work for somebody else. Even though we might work at the same place as our friend, and earn the same money each week, because our home lives are very different so too our budgets will be different.

There are many factors to consider in a budget: how much debt do I have? How much are my weekly, monthly and annual bills? How much income do we receive each week? What are our financial priorities? What savings would we like to put aside for the future? What will our needs be in a years time? In five years time? In a decade? Possibly the biggest question we must ask ourselves is: do we have enough income to sustain the life we’re leading now and into the future?

Sadly, for so many of us, we don’t have an income problem but a spending problem. The perfect budget has many facets. It has a portion to repay our debt as soon as possible, without choking the finances. There is also a portion for day to day bills which enables us to pay these accounts on time without stress. And, of course, there is also a portion that puts a little aside for ‘rainy days’. So many of us have no savings and therefore have to borrow money for the times when disaster strikes.

Finding the perfect budget for your family won’t happen overnight. It takes some planning, and then some test-runs to make sure the perfect mix of spending and saving are in the right proportions. It needs time and patience to get it right for you and your family. The first step to finding the perfect budget is to start working on it! ©

Planning your Budget

budgeting
A budget is everything to a business; it is the epitome of professionalism as well as the lifeblood of good planning. It is absolutely impossible to do anything well in business without a budget to go by and indeed in the cases of some more established business models it is actually illegal not to have regular budgets that show exactly what is going on with the business in a financial sense.

When it comes right down to it, planning your budget is one of the most crucial things you could ever hope to do for your business. A properly planned budget that is then executed well is going to be a great help to any business and of course a poorly planned budget is going to be the downfall of most businesses; usually before they’ve even had a chance to succeed.

So, what exactly makes a good budget? Well, reducing it down to first principles any budget that has inflows to cover the outflows is a good start. More so than that however, the inflows need to be at least equivalent if not in excess of the outflows and the outflows combined have to create something that is competitive to the business itself.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to making budgets lies along the lines of the cost efficiency principle. The cost efficiency principle basically states that you should not be afraid to spend X dollars if you are going to get Y dollars in return with Y being at least equal to X if not greater. Now, this is an interesting concept but some would argue it is not one that is particularly tenable in the earlier stages of a business because a business needs to spend a lot to get itself off the ground.

This is a good point, but one that is superficial at best. While each item X may not result in a gross income of Y, you can always add items together in order to receive that result. If you have X + Y + Z resulting in A + B + C and both of those equations are equal to D, then there is really nothing to worry about because overall you are adhering to the cost efficiency principle in your budget.

This is exactly what good planning for a budget is. You identify what needs to be done from a financial sense and then you make sure to carry it out in a way that allows you to maintain the cost efficiency principle. Don’t ever spend money in a business unless you expect to get money (or something as valuable as money) out of it; otherwise, what is the point of going into business in the first place?
