Budget Treadmills – What You Need to Know!

budgeting
So you want to get back into shape and lose those unwanted pounds.  The problem is you have a limited budget, so a commercial grade model is out of the question.  In fact, your limited to models under $1,000.

This puts you in the budget treadmill category. Although they may not be a sturdy as high-end treadmills, there are some budget models that can help you acheive your fitness goals without requiring a second mortgage.

There are several considerations before purchasing a budget treadmill.

Budget treadmills have some limitations.  They are not designed to train for marathons, and they are not built to withstand hours of usage per day.  Budget treadmills are best designed for walkers, although certain models in the  $800+ range can handle joggers.

Budget treadmill are not as durable as more expensive models. They are built with budget parts. Your chances of needing service increase in comparison to higher priced machines.

Budget treadmills come with budget warranties.  Some have coverage for only 90 days.  I recommend you get an extended warranty that covers you for at least two years.  If the machine breaks it is not your problem.

Usually the specified user weight limited is too high. It is absurd to suggest a treadmill for under $1,000 can handle a 300+ lbs user.

Here are some recommendations regarding the features of a budget treadmill.

Motor - You need a motor that is sufficient enough to work without straining at higher speeds or steeper inclines.  I recommend at least a 2.5 continuous duty HP motor.

Treadbelt Length – You want a length that is adequate for your height.  For an average individual a 54″ treadbelt is sufficient.  If you are over 6’3″ you may need to upgrade to a model that has a 60″ treadbelt.

Stability - Budget treadmills are often lightweight treadmills.  You want a model that is stable when walking or jogging.  Some models under $600 may bounce around when you use them. The heavier you are the heavier you need your treadmill.

User Programs – Some people prefer manually adjusting their treadmill.  However, a selection of challenging programs can be very motivating.   You want to get a treadmill that has at least 6 workout programs.  User defined functions can also be a plus.

Brand Recognition – There are countless brands of treadmills, some are decent while others are junk.  Check out both expert and customer reviews.  Learn which brands have the best track record.  Equally important, find manufacturers that have a good customer service reputation.  Go to the Treadmill Buyer’s Guide to learn more about treadmill features.)

Here are some recommendations.  Icon Fitness, which builds ProForm and NordicTrack treadmills, dominate the budget market.  They tend to offer some of the best value and pack their models with impressive features, considering what you pay for them. Focus on their models that are on sale.

On the high-end of the budget category, both Smooth and Sole have an entry model that starts at $1,000.  Both offer a lifetime warranty on the motor and 3-year parts coverage.

In general I would caution on buying a treadmill below $600.  Considering the abuse a treadmill takes in order to function, you want to avoid a cheap treadmill with cheap parts.  And you are not going to get into shape or lose weight when your treadmill is an oversize clothes hanger that doesn’t work.

When buying a budget treadmill do your research and use some common sense and you will end up with a machine that will help you achieve your fitness goals.

What Happens When You Do not Have a Home Business Budget?

budgeting
Your home business is finally out of the red, cash is coming in and things could not be better. Due to increased demand, you now need a faster computer with more memory and a better printer. Unfortunately, even though your home business is generating revenue, you did not plan a budget and you do not have funds to buy the equipment you need. You could rent, lease or finance the equipment needed for your home business, but you do not know if you can afford monthly payments because, again, you have no budget. Starting to see the problem? Without creating a proper home business budget, you are eventually going to run into some serious financial problems.

Think You Do Not Need a Budget?

If you think you do not need a home business budget, you are sorely mistaken. Trust me, you are not the first person to think they can operate their home business without a budget and you definitely will not be the last. However, like those who have gone before you and those who will come after you, if you do not wake up and realize a home business budget is a true necessity your home business is going to fail.

The only way you can effectively plan for the expenses your home business is going to incur is by creating a home business budget. Without this budget, you are not going to be prepared for anything and if you are not prepared, you might not be able to pay. If you can not pay for the services and supplies your business needs, your home business is going to crumble to the ground. Don’t believe me? Look at this scenario.

Let’s say John started a home business and did not bother to lay out a home business budget. John knows what his home business needs, but he has got cash in reserve so he is not too worried about paying for those needs. Three months into the home business, John’s cash reserves are becoming nonexistent and while his business is bringing in some money, it is going to take another three months for his home business to generate enough revenue to cover the business expenses and John’s salary. Unfortunately, the money in reserve is not going to last three more months and John’s got a serious problem.

John’s DSL bill comes in and he can not pay it. His DSL service gets disconnected. It is an inconvenience, but he can operate his home business with a dialup connection so it is not yet a disaster. However, a few weeks later he can not pay his phone bill and his phone gets turned off. You can not operate your business without a phone or a connection to the Internet. John’s home business is now dead in the water. The sad part is, if he had created a home business budget he would have been better prepared and this would never have happened. When you stop and think about the consequences of not having a home business budget, the importance of having one becomes all too clear.

Plan Ahead

If you want to avoid the same disaster John faced, get your home business budget in order. Lay all of your expenses on the table and make sure you add a cushion for unexpected expenses and emergencies. This way you have some idea of how much you need to make each month and what you need to spend.

Better Late Than Never

If you have not yet created a budget for your home business, do not despair. You are not alone and it is not too late. Creating a budget for your home business is not too hard to do and it should not take too much time. Get paper and a pencil, sit down at your desk and get to work. You will be done with the home business budget before you know it and someday you will thank yourself for it.

Setting Up a Personal Budget

budgeting
Why is it that the word “Budget” seems to create such fear in so many people? It’s as if using one will take all the fun out of life because it’s some sort of draconian money management scheme that ties up all your money. Fortunately setting up a personal budget is not that complicated and if done correctly it can free up money to the point that it looks like you are getting a raise.

If you’ve thought about making a household budget but have reservations or just haven’t taken the plunge there is no better time then now. The first thing to do is understand that it isn’t all that complicated. All a budget is is a listing of expenses and income. It really is that simple. You don’t need the latest book, spreadsheet, or budgeting software to get started all you need is a notebook and pencil.

Once you have you pencil and paper ready go back through all your bills for the past three months. It is also helpful to have your checkbook register handy because on your sheet of paper you are going to write down by expense how much you spent. Add up each expense and then divide by 3, which is the amount of months you have gone back. This will give you a monthly average for each expense. Add up all the expenses and write this down at the bottom of the page.

Now on a separate piece of paper write down all your monthly income. Include income from regular jobs, part time jobs, investment income, or any other income you might have coming in each month. Add that up and write it down at the bottom of the page.

Now’s the time when most people look at the income and the expenses and a huge gasp of disbelief leaves their lips because they are spending more money then they are making. If this is you look at that number closely and then use that budget of what you have been spending to create a budget for the next month of what you will be spending. This is what a personal budget is, a spending plan that tells your money what to do and where to go.

Look back over your expenses and start finding things you’ve been spending money on that just doesn’t make sense. How often do you eat out? Trips to Starbucks? This is the time to stop the bleeding and recoup all that money that just seems to disappear every month because you don’t want to wake up one day and wonder why you don’t have any money for the future.

Here’s the crux of the budgeting process. You have a snapshot of where your money has been going based on the expenses you have written down. Now instead of looking at the past let’s translate these expenses to the upcoming month. If you write down all your expenses for the upcoming month and allocate funds for these upcoming expenses you have won half the battle. This ensures that your bills are paid and every dollar you will have coming in has already been told what to do before the month even begins.

One last word about setting up a personal budget. Be patient, the first couple of months you do it it will not work out quite as you had planned. It will take some tweaking to get the process down but by the third month you should start to get the hang of it and before long you will have control of your financial future.
